Advanced proposals in music therapy improvisation
Created and taught by Dr. Gustavo Gattino, the course is aimed at music therapists and music therapy students. It is the result of his extensive experience as a teacher of bachelor's and master's programmes at Aalborg University (Denmark), in the courses of music improvisation and clinical improvisation, as well as considering the almost 20 years of clinical experience using improvisation in music therapy.
GOAL
- To present and facilitate the possibilities of using improvisation in music therapy from an advanced perspective that can be applied to different populations and contexts.
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES
- To present and facilitate specific possibilities for musical proposals (focused on musical resources)
- To present and facilitate specific possibilities for technological proposals (focused on using musical apps, artificial intelligence, and software)
- To present and facilitate specific possibilities for emotional proposals (focused on emotional issues during improvisation)
CONTENTS
- The use of improvisational musical proposals based on scales, modes, songs, genres, and rhythms.
- The use of improvisational technological proposals based on the use of the platforms Groove Pad, Sprunki, Suno, Remusic, and the use of different AI resources, such as Bing Chat Image Creator, ChatGPT, and Manus.
- The use of improvisational emotional proposals based on referential, associative, intimacy, and reflective techniques.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR PARTICIPANTS
- Have a harmonic/melodic instrument with you during the course.
- The recordings will be available for two weeks after the course (then they will be deleted).
DURATION: 2 hours
COST: 20 € (early rate until the 20th of March) / 35 € (from the 21st of March until the course date)

Gustavo Schulz Gattino, PhD, is a music therapist and Associate Professor in the Department of Communication and Psychology at Aalborg University (Denmark). He is a teacher in the same university's Bachelor's, Master and PhD music therapy programs. He is accredited as a music therapist by the Portuguese Association of Music Therapy (APMT).
